Choosing your Patron Saint for Confirmation

A patron saint is someone whom you will have as a particular intercessor in heaven--someone in particular to whom you will look for saintly example and who will intercede (pray) for you. Often, it is meaningful to choose a saint that you can identify with in some way. Are you going to be a doctor, maybe you want to choose Saint Luke for your patron. Is your family very proud of your Irish heritage, maybe you want Saint Patrick as your patron.

When we talk about a saint's "patronage", we're talking about a connection a saint has with an activity or an aspect of their life which they now pray for in heaven. Saint Peregrine, for example, suffered from cancer but was miraculously cured after having a dream of Jesus healing him. Therefore, Saint Peregrine is a patron saint for people suffering from cancer. Another example: Saint Joseph of Cupertino was so holy and entered so deeply in prayer that he was known to levitate (float) while he was in contemplation. Therefore, Saint Joseph of Cupertino is a patron saint for pilots.
